I'm off
I'm headed to the airport in 5 minutes. Austin to Chicago, and then Chicago to Tokyo/Narita. I'll post again when I've established internet access on the other side. Right now my main worry is that the housing my hosts have found for me will cost 277,050 yen, and my stipend is only about 600,000 yen. (100 yen is approximately 1 dollar) Since it's supposed to be quite expensive to eat and live in Tokyo, I'm not sure that the remainder will be enough to live comfortably. Maybe it's significant that ramen noodles originated in Japan...

Timestamps are in Tokyo time now.
So I'm really leaving for the airport at 5:30 am.
is that 277,000 a month?! While I knwo nothing about the Tokyo market that strikes me as ridiculously expensive. However, if your stipend is 600,000 a month, and even with such a high rent, I don't think you should have any problems getting by. You might not be able to hit the bars every night, but you'll certainly be able to live comfortably. ~ Carl
Hehe, I'll answer for Justin. It's 277,000 for the entire two months, so 138,500, or roughly $1300 per month. Still very expensive by Texan standards. I got lucky and only had to spend $100 per month on rent + utilities when I lived in an international student dorm in Fukuoka.
I know some people who have used Sakura for temporary and not too expensive housing in Tokyo. You might check them out. http://www.sakura-house.com/
Sakura house looks like a real possibility. I wish that I either had my atlas with or, or could find a decent transit map online. I have no idea where anything is...
